Top 5 reasons to get children using their Imagination

Let’s get one thing straight before we start… no one at the Adventure Team has a degree in psychology or child development. This blog is purely based on our experiences as parents and children’s entertainers.

At The Adventure Team, getting kids to use their imagination is central to what we do and why we do it. We love seeing the joy in children’s faces as they use their imagination.

Here are our top 5 reasons for encouraging it!

5. Because it makes things more memorable and special.

Imagine if you took your child for a walk dressed as a fairy and you pretended the woods were a magical mystical place. How much more fun are they going to get from the experience than if you just go on a walk. Most children don’t like walking in the first place, but if the whole experience becomes part of your special imaginary world we promise they will!

Every tree becomes a potential fairy house, every bit of moss and leaf something you can add to your fairy dust potion.

4. Because it gets them active

When children use their imagination in play, it often comes with physical exertion. It gets kids up and around and moving. An active kid is a happy kid!

If you add a bit of (polyester) fancy dress into the equation, it also means they will sweat, which is healthy!

3. Problem solving

It is proven (we think) that using your imagination helps you process problems and find solutions in every day life. As an adult, when we are faced by a problem, we weigh up possible ways around it. Some people are better at this than others. Most of the time finding a solution is down to creativity (read imagination) or experience. For children, their experience is normally limited and this increases the importance of imagination.

2. It gives you some time off

When children are playing make believe, they are inevitably happy and absorbed in what they are doing. Whilst we love playing with our children, sometimes we also enjoy having a beer and reading the newspaper!

1. Because it is FUN and FREE

Enough said!
